AirOzone Ozone O3 Generator fitted in grow tent extraction ducting

Do Ozone Generators Actually Remove Grow Tent Smell?

An ozone generator can knock out grow tent odours that a carbon filter alone doesn't fully catch, but only when it's used exactly as designed: fitted into your extraction system after the fan, discharging into several metres of ducting before that air goes anywhere near you, and never run loose inside an occupied room. Used any other way, the evidence says ozone strong enough to reliably kill odours is also strong enough to irritate your lungs, which is why most growers should treat it as a specialist add-on to a carbon filter rather than a replacement for one.

What Does an Ozone Generator Actually Do?

An ozone generator uses a high-voltage corona discharge plate to split oxygen molecules (O2) apart. The freed oxygen atoms latch onto other O2 molecules nearby and form ozone (O3), an unstable, highly reactive gas. When that ozone comes into contact with odour-carrying compounds in the air, it can oxidise them into smaller, less smelly molecules.

In a grow tent setup, the unit sits inside your extraction ducting, after the fan and usually after your carbon filter, so the ozone reacts inside a sealed duct run on its way outside rather than inside the tent or the room. The manufacturer of the AirOzone units DiscountHydro stocks states that at least 5 metres of exhaust ducting is needed after the unit for the ozone to react with the air before it leaves the system.

Does Ozone Actually Get Rid of Grow Tent Smell?

This is where growers need an honest answer rather than a sales pitch. The US Environmental Protection Agency has reviewed ozone-generating air cleaners in detail, and its conclusion is blunt: at concentrations that stay within public health limits, ozone is not effective at removing many odour-causing chemicals. Some smelly compounds will react with ozone, but the EPA also notes that little is known about the by-products this creates, and that ozone has shown no measurable effect on some common indoor pollutants at all.

That doesn't mean the technology is useless, it means the effect is dose-dependent. Enough ozone, with enough contact time, will oxidise more of what's passing through the duct. The trouble is that "enough ozone" is also where the safety limits start to matter, which is the next question.

Is It Safe to Run an Ozone Generator on Your Grow Tent?

Ozone is a respiratory irritant, not a background chemical you can shrug off. The UK's Health and Safety Executive sets a workplace exposure limit for ozone of 0.20 parts per million (ppm) over a 15-minute reference period. US federal limits sit in a similar range: 0.10 ppm as an 8-hour average from OSHA, and just 0.05 ppm indoors for medical devices under FDA rules. In its own testing, the EPA found a consumer ozone generator running under normal instructions pushed a small room to 0.50 to 0.80 ppm, five to ten times over those limits.

That's the whole reason ozone generators for grow rooms are built to sit inside a sealed duct run rather than sit in open air like a room ioniser: the ozone is meant to react and break down before the air reaches you, your household, or your pets, not to be breathed in directly. Practical safety rules that follow from this: never run one loose in a tent or room, always duct the output outside, keep the discharge point away from anywhere people or animals spend time, and don't treat it as a substitute for good extraction and a carbon filter doing the main work.

Ozone Generator or Carbon Filter: Which Should You Buy First?

For almost every home grower, the answer is a carbon filter first. It's cheaper, carries no lung-safety asterisk, and is the accepted baseline for odour control whether you're growing tomatoes, chillies, or aromatic herbs. An ozone generator is a second layer for larger setups or spaces where a carbon filter alone isn't keeping up, added on top of, not instead of, your existing filtration.

How Do You Size and Install One Without Risk?

Match the unit's diameter to your existing ducting and fan spigot, exactly as you would for a fan or filter, so there's no restriction and no gap for air to bypass. Position the ozone unit downstream of your fan and carbon filter, then allow the manufacturer's recommended 5 metres of ducting after it before the air reaches open air outside. That length gives the ozone time to react with whatever the carbon filter didn't catch, rather than venting a strong dose straight outside your window.

If you don't already have a properly set up extraction run with a fan, filter and enough ducting to work with, sort that out first. Our guide to setting up grow tent ventilation covers fan sizing, filter matching and duct layout in more detail, and is worth reading before you add an ozone unit on top.

How Long Do the Ozone Plates Last?

The corona discharge plates inside an ozone generator gradually lose output as they age, the same way a fluorescent tube dims over years of use rather than failing outright. AirOzone units are built to be serviced rather than thrown away once this happens: the plates are a replaceable part, sized to match your existing unit, rather than a reason to buy a whole new generator. If odour control seems to be quietly getting worse even though your fan, filter and ducting haven't changed, ageing plates are worth checking before you assume something else has gone wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I still need a carbon filter if I have an ozone generator?

Yes. An ozone generator is designed to sit alongside a carbon filter, not replace one. The filter does the main work of trapping odour molecules, and the ozone unit deals with whatever gets through, particularly useful in larger rooms or multi-tent setups where a single filter is working near its limit.

Is it safe to run an ozone generator while I'm in the room?

No. Ozone units for grow spaces are built to sit inside a sealed exhaust duct, reacting with the air on its way outside, not to run loose in an occupied room. The UK's workplace exposure limit for ozone is 0.20ppm over 15 minutes, and testing has shown some consumer units can push a small unvented room well past that, so the discharge point always needs to be outside, away from people and pets.

Can ozone harm my plants?

Ozone is reactive and can damage plant tissue at high concentrations, which is another reason the unit sits in the exhaust ducting after the air has already left the tent, rather than inside the growing space itself.

How much ducting do I need after the ozone unit?

The manufacturer's guidance for the AirOzone range calls for at least 5 metres of ducting downstream of the unit, giving the ozone time to react with the air before it's released. Acoustic ducting such as PhonicTrap is a straightforward way to add that extra run without introducing more noise.

Will an ozone generator work without an extraction fan?

No. It needs to sit inline in a working extraction system, with a fan pulling air through the duct past the unit and out. Without airflow, the ozone has nowhere to go and won't treat the air moving through your tent.

How do I know if the ozone plates need replacing?

The clearest sign is odour control quietly getting worse over time even though your fan, filter, ducting and grow routine haven't changed. Since the plates are a wearing part rather than a permanent fixture, checking and replacing them is usually simpler than troubleshooting the rest of the system first.
